Recent advancements in energy-harvesting hardware have created an opportunity for realizing batteryless wearables for continuous and pervasive human activity recognition. Unfortunately, power consumption of accelerometers used in conventional HAR is relatively high compared to the amount of power that can be harvested practically, which limits the usefulness of energy harvesting. We explore the feasibility of using the output signal of energy harvesting devices for sensing. We have designed a number of energy harvesting based sensing systems such as gait recognition, communication, activity recognition, and transportation mode detection. Our results demonstrate that the designed system can achieve the same accuracy as accelerometer-based systems, yet consumes only a small fraction of the limited harvested energy.
